Short Description:
The course introduces students to the study of cultural diversity in society and the impact this has upon our understandings of education. By building on literature influenced by sociology, anthropology, philosophy and political perspectives the course gives students an interdisciplinary approach to discussions about the place and the role of education in a pluralistic society. The course deals with questions related to race, ethnicity, language, religion, and gender from the perspective of democracy and human rights. The course also examines questions about diversity in education, such as critical multiculturalism, interculturalism and anti-racism, and their underlying principles. Examples will be drawn from both Swedish and international contexts.
